The Awaaz Uthao Campaign (AUC) was a community led initiative by the Delhi Government to address the issue of VAWG and rolled out at the grassroots level with the full support of the community. This campaign was been implemented by a select number of Gender Resource Centres, including CEQUINs GRC. Under the AUC, over 60 local collectives were formed in Jamia Nagar, Delhi to act as community watchdogs and enable a safer environment for women and girls. Their initial focus was that of meeting and discussing VAWG in public spaces in the community, however it expanded to cover a range of issues in the community. These citizen collectives would regularly meet and discuss strategies for further awareness generation, conducting safety audits in the community and discussions on issues pertaining to health, hygiene, gender discrimination, general women’s rights, education and early marriage and steps to take to address these problems. They would also lead safety audits and engage the local police, RWA, MLA’s to engage with the findings of these audits, and make them accountable to bring change. They would hold large scale public meetings and community events, galvanising over 50,000 people in the community, building awareness on the importance of addressing sexual harassment in public spaces. One of the key impacts of this campaign was a strong community of men and boys who got engaged with CEQUIN in Jamia Nagar.
